Manifest V3 Chrome Extensions: What Changed & How We Build Them
Google's Manifest V3 broke a lot of legacy extensions. Here's our current production setup for building compliant, fast MV3 extensions.
Google's transition to Manifest V3 phased out persistent background pages in favor of ephemeral Service Workers.
Key architectural shifts for modern extension developers:
1. Service Workers: Background tasks must be stateless and handle dormancy gracefully.
2. Declarative Net Request: Replacing blocking webRequest with rule-based request interception.
3. Local Storage Sync: Using chrome.storage.local with indexed caches rather than relying on global window state.
In our Sprint 03 engagements, we build production Manifest V3 extensions with TypeScript and Tailwind CSS, bundled with modern Vite tooling for rapid iteration.
